Though it is difficult to imagine who performed these cantatas and in what sort of settings, it is clear that Italian cantata manuscripts held a fascination for English musicians, maybe as a trophy of their experiences on the Grand Tour: a trophy to be enjoyed in the bleak afternoons of an English autumn, while reminiscing over the cultural pleasures and blue skies of Italy.
