- Description
- The year is 1711, the author is the celebratedEnglish essayist and critic Joseph Addison, and his subject is Italian opera. What would he have made of the cantata genre – an evenmore eccentric formof entertainment, consisting largely of messages delivered in music to an absent beloved? And yet hundreds of volumes of Italian cantatas were brought to England in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, where they nowmake up the collections of the British Library, the Royal College of Music, Christ Church College Oxford, the Fitzwilliam Library Cambridge, to name but a few. Though it is difficult to imagine who performed these cantatas and in what sort of settings, it is clear that Italian cantata manuscripts held a fascination for English musicians, maybe as a trophy of their experiences on the Grand Tour: a trophy to be enjoyed in the bleak afternoons of an English autumn, while reminiscing over the cultural pleasures and blue skies of Italy.
